YESTERDAY....

we never did get as far as Skyline Drive but we did go to the Manassas Civil War Battlefield.  I will share a few photos below and do a longer post later.  There isn't a lot of time before we go out.  It was a pretty day as you can see below, and the sun is shining so need to get out and enjoy it.  We have a couple of errands to run before we head towards the mountains.

We stopped at the Visitor Center first.

Below you can see Gregg and Bill walking over to Stonewall Jackson's Statue....

and here they are right next to it.

Jackson is sitting on his beloved war horse Little Sorrel.

A close up of the stone in the above photo.

I couldn't help but stop and say hello to this little fellow.  He was lovely and after checking with his owner this sweet little dog was very friendly and enjoyed a bit of fussing.  I had taken this photo far off and cropped it.

We ended up having my birthday meal at a Thai restaurant relatively close to home.  It was a very nice way to end the day, and I was happy to have Bill there to help celebrate.  One of the staff took our photo.

  1. that dog is so sweet, would love to hug him. I like the first photo, we just watched Cold Mountain, the movie last night and were talking about the 650,000 that died in this war that was to last a few months. I do hope we never have another war like that one that tore the states a part.

    1. He was Sandra, absolutely adorable and so friendly. I haven't watched Cold Mountain, I will have to rent it. I have learned quite a bit of history on the Civil War from our visits to several of the battlefields around here. I want to go back to Gettysburg and have never been to Antietam in Maryland. It is on our list. I always find it hard to believe that this very beautiful and serene area saw so much loss of life. There are displays of artifacts that have been dug up on archeological digs at Manassas in the visitor center. I will have to share them one of these days.

  6. What a wonderful picture of the three of you! The day looks beautiful! We have been to Stonewall Jackson's house in Lexington. Did you know that shortly before he died, they amputated his arm? It was buried in a separate place from the rest of him! I love how you snapped the horse from underneath, powerful!

  7. You've certainly showed your cousin a good time -- so much to see in your area -- he's learning so much about the US and it must be really fun to share info about your ancestors!

  12. Interesting post about history that I did not know. Love the beagle, my mum had one and it had a mind of its own but she still loved it. Great photo of you in the Thai restaurant. Diane

    1. We had a friend years ago with a beagle. This one was so very cute. Every time its owner took him for a walk, if it turned out a very hot day, the beagle would plop down on the ground and would not budge. She ended up being carried home by our friend. I sometimes wonder who trains who :)
